Poker Machines Glossary
- Ace High: A hand of cards that contains one ace.
- Ace Kicker: When a player holds a lone ace while drawing replacement cards.
- Aces Up: When a player has two pairs and one of those pairs is aces.
- Cancel Button: This is the button on the video poker machine that resets all the HOLD buttons.
- Cash Out Button: This is the button on the video poker machine that allows the player to convert credits to coin.
- Deal Button: This is the button on the video poker machine that allows the player to deal out the next hand.
- Deuce: This is known as the two (2) card.
- Deuces Wild: This is when the wild card is designated as the two (2) card.
- Discard: The card/cards that are not held while drawing new cards.
- Discard Button: This is the button on the machine that discards the unwanted cards, allowing the player to draw new cards.
- Draw: The act of replacing the cards that were not held in your video poker hand.
- Draw Button: This is the button on the video poker machine that replaces the cards that were not held.
- Face Card: Jack, Queen, and King cards.
- Five of a Kind: Four cards of the same rank plus the wild card.
- Flush: When a player has all five cards in the same suit.
- Four Card Royal: When a player holds four (4) of the five (5) cards needed for a royal flush.
- Four Flush: When a player holds four (4) of the five (5) cards needed for a flush.
- Four of a Kind: When a player holds four (4) cards of the same rank.
- Four Straight: When a player holds four (4) of the five (5) cards needed for a straight.
- Full House: When a player holds a pair plus three (3) of a kind.
- Hand: The cards that are held by the player.
- High Card: Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) or an ace.
- High Pair: A pair of Face Cards or aces.
- Hold Button: The button on the video poker machine that does not discard chosen cards when drawing new ones.
- House Edge: The difference between the payoff odds and actual odds.
- Jacks or Better: Playing video poker in which a pair of Jacks is the lowest paid hand.
- Joker: An extra card with no face value that is designated the wild card.
- Kicker: A card that is held in the player’s hand even though it is unmatched. Generally a poor strategy.
- Low Pair: A pair of cards that does not pay. Usually cards 2 – 9 or 2 – 10.
- Odds: The number of ways to lose ratio versus the number of ways to win.
- Pair: When a player holds two cards of the same rank.
- Pat Hand: When a player holds a winning and does not require drawing more cards.
- Payoff: Amount paid for a winning hand.
- Royal Flush: When a player holds 10, Jack, Queen , King, and Ace of the same suit.
- Stand Button: The button on the video poker machine holds all five cards.
- Straight: When a player holds five cards of consecutive rank. The suit is not important.
- Straight Flush: When a player holds five cards of consecutive rank and in the same suit.
- Three of a Kind: When a player holds 3 cards of the same rank.
- Two Pairs: When a player holds two (2) cards of one rank plus two (2) cards of another rank.
- Wild Card: A card that may be designated as any other card to improve a hand.
